It is evident through our work in the Sexual Health Centre that the amount of LGBTI+ terminology in existence can sometimes be overwhelming for people. This guide explains some of these terms, many of which will be familiar and others that may be new to you. Some of the terminology is widely accepted, while certain terms may be offensive, outdated or poorly understood. Terms relating to sexuality and gender expression/identity can often be confused, therefore, this guide has separated the terminology into two sections, Sexuality and Gender. These areas and the language used continues to evolve. Keep in mind that some terms may develop new meanings or words can rapidly fall out of use and have new terms replacing them. Therefore, the most this guide can offer is a snapshot of current LGBTI+ terminology in 2022.
It is important not to assume any person’s sexuality or gender identity based on their name, appearance, or stereotypes. Best practice is to always ask a person how they identify, would like to be identified and what pronouns they would like to be addressed by. Should you make a mistake, acknowledge it, apologise and move on.
