Only use tampons when you are actively bleeding - not before or after your period. Different types of tampons can be used for different levels of bleeding. You can usually use light and regular tampons, and change them every few hours. 'Super' tampons can be used for very heavy bleeding. Some tampons come with applicators - these are plastic or cardboard covers that help you put the tampon in your vagina. Other tampons do not have an applicator, so you put them in with your finger.
Wash your hands and get into a comfortable position. You can squat, put one leg up, or sit with your knees apart.
Push the tampon into your vagina using the applicator or your finger.
Throw the wrapper and applicator in a bin, not in a toilet.
Never leave your tampon in for more than 8 hours.
Tampons have a string at one end that hangs out of your vagina. To take the tampon out, gently pull the string. It’s easier to take your tampon out when it’s wet from absorbing menstrual blood.
Wrap used tampons in toilet paper and put them in a bin.
Do not put tampons in a toilet.
